Kill Bill Volume 1 – 2003

Kill Bill vol1

Kill bill shows you a clear difference between parody and homage. The films use many yesteryear clumsy cinema techniques in a rather amusing way.

The Plot (a bride seeks revenge on a team of assassins) and the narrative (obviously non-linear) doesn’t even matter when almost every frame of the movie turns out to be both visually and aurally entertaining. But the only problem is one must have a relatively good knowledge on other cultures to really enjoy all the subtle details. One feature that stands out in the first volume is the Japanese anime to narrate the rise of O-Ren Ishii.

When it comes to the style of film, a very famous dialog from Frasier comes to my mind. It goes something like this

Martin: None of the furniture matches

Frasier:  It’s a style of decorating. It’s eclectic. If you have fine pieces of furniture, it doesn’t matter if they match. They will go together.

Martin: Well, It’s your money

Assume that this movie is Tarantino’s first and he’s the producer. This would have very well been the conversation he’d have had with others in the production house.

Let me mention one place where this eclectic blew my mind off. The final katana showdown between Beatrix and O-Ren Ishii – a picturesque snowy night – Dont let me be misunderstood by Esmeralda Suite. Who’d have thought that this could work?

  1. I loved that fight sequence. At that time, it was a pioneer technique. Using soft songs as the BGM for fighting scenes. Now I see that almost everywhere. The music was so good! I remember I downloaded the songs and listened to them again and again and reliving the scenes in my head. Have you seen Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’?

    1. The filmmaker has a knack for revitalizing the forgotten popular music.
I can’t believe that Chinese cinema has eluded me till now. I’ve just added ‘In the Mood for Love’ to my ‘to watch’ list. This could be a good starting point to explore the Orient.
